Drow Sensuality
What you really wanted to know about the drow but were afraid to ask

Revised 7/2026

Sitting on a misty floor between braziers with purple smoke, a female drow with long white hair looks over her shoulder at the viewer while wearing nothing more than a dark purple skirt, a gleaming silver armband, and a mischievous smile.

This page discusses Lolthian drow as infamously evil fictional villains for the entertainment of adult readers only. Please read with discretion and gain your group's consent before engaging these ideas in your games.

The Tenets of Lolthian Desire

Vulnerability is Death

The drow have much to fear in each other, which is, of course, by Lolth's design. Her dogma teaches that showing vulnerability is a sin because it invites predation. Everyone has some kind of weakness, but showing it assures your doom. Grown drow should know better and use their many gifts to play it cool. By extension, blind trust and complete faith in anyone but Lolth is verboten. Such things make you more vulnerable than you already are, which is the worst kind of foolishness. It doesn't matter who someone is or how strong you think you are - anyone can prey on anyone else at any time and will, if the circumstances are right. That is the law of existence, and no amount of emotion will change it, or so the clerics claim.

Breeding is Destiny

At the same time, breeding is a key mandate of the Spider Queen's faith. All mature drow must strive to breed beyond simply replacing their numbers (and, if they can, to replace calamitous losses). To carry out their mission to own Faerun above and below the surface, there must be enough drow to keep everyone else in line. And the Underdark is already a terribly dangerous place on its own. While drow aren't fragile, they have higher attrition rates than other elves. So no matter how much they dislike and distrust each other, drow must mate until their duty is fulfilled. The good news is, plenty of them are interested in the acts that lead them there.

Pleasure is Victory

Physical pleasure and sexual desires aren't lesser or shameful things for dark elves; in fact, they're openly and widely encouraged. After all, every physical being has ways to feel good and enjoying yourself is a sign of victory. Lolth insists that the drow enjoy themselves deeply but never stupidly. It does no good to relish a moment if you lose out the next. For female drow, personal enjoyment is a goal and in some cases, a right. For males, should only eve ber a fervent hope. But whoever plays the game and comes out on top wins, so most drow take the field and strive for all the satisfaction they can reap.

These dictates influence how attraction, courtship, and mating play out in Lolthian settlements, whether they're followed faithfully or not. And more often than the Spider Queen would ever admit, her hold begins to break down when drow reach out for pleasure and find things she wants them to despise.

Approved Recreation

To encourage drow to breed regularly, Lolth's faith is quite permissive of sexual expression that can lead to that end. To start with, the church does not sanctify or outright forbid relationships. Couplings between drow are best, since they reinforce dark elf bloodlines. Joining with creatures and species renowned for their natural, heritable gifts is also supported, though they are less available. Pairings with other elven sub-species are allowed because elven blood is better than most. But if drow choose less-than-optimal partners, they won't be punished by the clergy (though they'll face scorn from other drow).

Either way, no one has to wait for a ritual or sanction from Lolth to begin or end a relationship; there is nothing like marriage or divorce in the faith. While matron mothers are expected to collect patrons, any drow may have various partners, so long as at least some mating takes place with the opposite sex. Female drow aren't expected to be continuously pregnant; even Lolth's mandate allows for spacing, security, and recovery. However, those who have less than two living offspring - or who haven't given birth for more than a decade despite being fertile - will be pressured to try again. Male drow must be ready to serve the breeding mandate at any point, if a female higher in station demands it and their matron mother has no objections.

Next, clergy set an example. Individually, they lead the way by coupling and giving birth regularly. Collectively, they host orgiastic rites open to mature followers on a fairly regular basis. This may be done before and after a major battle but also occurs to celebrate holidays. The music and aphrodisiacs at these gatherings are second to none, and for once, the point of a service is to have fun. These rites are among the best attended, even during war. And everyone knows about the orgies that mark graduations of clerics, including the summoning of outsiders that pair up with the highest achievers. More than a few ambitious souls have climbed the ranks for just such a privilege.

All of this sets the tone for celebratory culture in drow enclaves. Their taverns offer times to indulge with others who are seeking company; they may hold games, competitions, or raffles to decide pairings. Guilds host events and invite guests who stay after ceremonies to partake of each other. Groups of classmates, coworkers, and friends may end up doing the same, depending on their temperament. Those who don't participate in at least some of these revelries are suspect and may be maneuvered into partaking.

Great or small, the most important goals of these gatherings are pleasure and the chance to breed, usually with weak bonds or no real social ties. To keep things novel and discourage attachments, many events demand anonymity through the enforcement of magic disguises and even targeted silence spells. The underlying message isn't just that fathers don't matter but that caring is a waste of time, too. When you can satisfy Lolth and yourself as well, why would you need anyone else? And some drow certainly agree - at least for a while, on the surface, while the clergy are watching. But the cannier they get, the more they seek others in the shadows for their own ends.

Sex & The Single Drow: Attraction & Courtship

Dress for Success

What drow find most appealing about each other isn't necessarily what other species admire. Basic physical beauty is all fine and good but often considered low-effort and common. Many crave novelty and artifice with substance: elaborate designs in makeup and accoutrements, clothing that hides and reveals surprises, and unique looks that don't hobble their wearers. Sexy embellishments shouldn't get in the way of function; again, drow should not be stupid. But even small details show planning and imagination, and even the smallest tease can be appreciated for the pleasant daydreams that follow.

Given how they're trained to survive, Lolthian drow are highly aware of minute changes in their environment. Since small shifts catch their attention - and loud, brash displays tend to bring trouble - the signals they send are often subtle. Clergy often refrain from making special efforts to stand out or show their interest; they know they're desirable for their station and don't want to seem desperate. If they have a target in mind, however, they'll tailor their efforts. Others are more likely to show they're interested in playing - and perhaps how they're interested in playing - by changing how they present themselves.

Tokens Are Trash

Drow rarely give gifts to prospective or current lovers. For too many reasons, gifts are distrusted. First of all, no one expects them to come without strings attached. Secondly, the more valuable a present is, the more drow worry about the price they'll have to pay in the future. (That is, if a gift doesn't pose a threat to begin with - accept a poison-coated token, and the receiver won't have to worry about the future.) And lastly, gifts can be used as marks of influence or ownership. As members of a slave-keeping culture, drow are keenly concerned about who they seem beholden to.

Words Are Cheap

Words and speech aren't highly esteemed when it comes to courting, either. This isn't just because they know how manipulative they can be, although that's certainly a factor. When lies and hidden agendas are routine, compliments and confessions are difficult to take seriously. But practical considerations also work against poetry and murmured affections: in the Underdark, it can be dangerous to be overheard. Those who patrol beyond city walls move with stealth as much as those who are trying to avoid a cleric's notice at home. Private trysts require privacy and whether they're spoken or written, words can reveal intentions, plans, and events others shouldn't know. It is safer and more challenging to rely on body language, touch, and other methods that are harder to intercept.

Moves Matter Most

Drow courtship revolves around actions. It all starts with getting closer to a person of interest without being obvious about it, at least at first. It isn't unusual watch a lover from afar, not to pine over them but to learn more about them. Those who can spy their target probably will; those who can't may pay for information instead. Some prefer to keep their trysts secret so they maneuver for time alone, but others don't care who knows so they just aim for closer proximity. Since many of these actions can seem threatening and lead to violent confrontations, it's vital for drow to know when to make their desires plain. Showing they hold no weapons is a first step. Postures that show what they really want tends to be the second.

When flirting is finished, shows of strength and confidence help seal the deal. Signs of vulnerability - especially the desire to be vulnerable - will probably be met with disgust. If they aren't, everyone involved is entering dangerous territory: if they're seen and suspected of going soft, they may be reported to the clergy for correction. To err on the side of caution, drow usually stay coolly self-possessed; show off their skills, strength, and stamina; and treat the engagement like a game where they earn more points by pulling off tricky positions, keeping quiet, and racking up orgasms. Experiencing the height of pleasure isn't the only way to "win" - making a lover boil over despite themselves can make everything worth it.

Let's Address Some Risqué Topics

Kink

For some, consensual kink is thrilling because it acts out the power dynamics already present but in a different way or for different ends. Sometimes bondage and corporal punishment are appealing because they aren't being used for harm; for once, everyone agrees to how they're used and gets to enjoy it. A squad leader's gruff exterior can be much more interesting when she's giving you private orders for things you really want to do. For others, such activities are exciting because they go against Lolth's teachings. A female drow should never agree to be the less powerful party but she might for the right lover. A male drow could be granted a position of authority for an evening and also be allowed to relish it. The risks of angering Lolth are great but for some drow, that just makes every breach more satisfying.

Slaves

Since slaves are so common and powerless in drow society, it's easy to assume they are seen as fitting sexual conquests. There are many reasons why this isn't the case. To begin with, Lolthian drow believe they're superior to other species and only breed outside their own if they see advantage in it. They're also taught to loath those below them in the social hierarchy, of which slaves are the lowest rung. Drow have far more to lose than to gain by pursuing slaves for personal interactions. Being too friendly or even too cruel can bring accusations of weakness. And slaves are kept busy unto exhaustion with tasks that keep them away from most drow. Simply put, they can find more engaging and challenging partners elsewhere without risking their reputations.

When In Doubt, Talk It Out

What if sex and romance are allowed at your table to some degree, but not kink? Then ignore the paragraph about it above; drow can have engaging relations in your games without it. Feel free to adjust other aspects here. For instance, drow needn't stalk each other or seem to - they could just as easily forego all of that and arrange "happenstance" outings to get to know each other instead. The same goes for slavery: just because they're traditionally associated with it doesn't mean you have to include it.

And what about the force and torture for which dark elves are infamous? As unpleasant as such thoughts are, it isn't unusual to wonder about these things. They have come up in campaigns and even on this site. When I previously wrote about drow sensuality here, I hard-baked some of it into how they interact because that's what seemed to be the logical result of how they were presented in the books I'd read. But even in fiction, sexual coercion is disturbing to most people for many reasons, and that needs to be acknowledged. Adding elements of enslavement or torture are likely to upset people in your campaign, too. Unless you're quite comfortable together and with such topics, bringing them up can cause far more trouble than they're worth. If they're of interest, consider and discuss such things carefully, get everyone's clear consent, and be prepared to drop these topics if they cause discomfort. There are other ways for villains to be wicked and drow can be sexy without being sadomasochists.

An Appetite for Connection

The Hidden Hunger for Touch

What most other species don't understand about drow is just how desperately touch-starved they are. This perhaps more than anything else is a secret and key to seducing them: in a society as fickle and violent as theirs, skin-to-skin contact is almost always brief, fraught, and rare. Keeping others at a distance is a good idea because when drow do make contact, weapons or punishment are often involved. Who among them doesn't know the sting of a cleric's whip or the back of a mother's hand? When others pull rank and touch a drow against their wishes, it's likely to be accompanied by jeers or threats. This usually leads to fear, humiliation, and resentment, not arousal.

But the thirst for touch abides, and flirting and sex are some of the only ways drow receive pleasant stimulation. For this, they will take risks they would avoid otherwise, and for lovers who continue to touch them without harm, they will go above and beyond. Most will try to avoid contact out of instinct but should it happen - and should they like it - they may have an easier time shrugging off spells than their desire for more. Any kind of lingering and pleasurable skin-to-skin contact will do: more than one hardened Lolthian has seen their walls crumble just by holding a true friend's hand for the first time - and at long last.

A Mission for Meaning

The healthiest relationships in Lolthian society are borne of mutual attraction, rooted in mutual admiration, and dedicated to mutual success. These bonds happen despite everything working against them because they must. Eventually, the right people will meet. Some of them will pursue each other, and some of them will succeed. And some will give anything to have connections that mean something to them. They'll do whatever it takes to keep something that's theirs - not Lolth's, theirs. And they just so happen to be reared with the skills required: the same lying and sneaking that keep them alive help them hide their real reasons to live. They may not be able to escape their city, but they can escape their façade for a little while with secret loves, and that might be enough.

Despite the mandate to breed, drow are rarely disdainful of arrangements between those that can't naturally produce offspring. Same-sex relations are common enough and even expected, given how gender-segregated Lolthian enclaves can be. Being open regardless of gender is also common, and not just because pleasure means victory, regardless of who it comes from. The need to find compatriots can be overwhelming, particularly in a culture that demonizes trust. Whoever proves themself loyal and true cannot be ignored. If more than one such person can be found, they may be more inclined to work together than to tear each other apart. This won't necessarily stand out, since open relationships are accepted in any case. But genuine caring is so precious - and possibly damaging - that many refuse to risk losing out because of confusion or jealousy.

Ultimately, love among their own is one of the main ways non-evil gods find their way into the hearts and minds of drow. Llira and Sune aren't the only ones to reach out to hidden lovers, either. Yearning for freedom, justice, and peace may bring emissaries and dreams from Lathander, Tymora, and Tyr; prayers for escape may be answered by Selune instead of Eilistraee. Those brave enough to follow the signs may find their way out of Lolth's clutches for good and the ones they care about may give them every reason to try. Drow who supposedly perish in battles and natural disasters may survive in lands far away with those they treasure most. Some are unable to convince their loved ones to go but leave anyway because, having tasted the cure, they can no longer abide the Spider Queen's poison.

This is a secret Lolth loathes and is loath to admit: she cannot abide what she cannot provide and she cannot admit the power of emotions she can no longer feel, and love can - and does - overcome her designs for her children.
